Fischer Outstanding in Net; Hawks fall in opener to Eagles
The 2019 spring season started off with the annual “Bird Bowl”, with Edison visiting the Hawks Nest. Unfortunately, the Hawks were not able to capitalize on Senior Goalie Jake Fischer’s excellent net minding. Fischer repeatedly turned back the Eagles, who peppered Fischer and the Hawks defense, outshooting Hayfield 36 to 18. At one point in the 4th quarter, Fischer had to become a contortionist, when he deflected a certain Edison goal up above his head. As the ball fell behind him, about to cross the goal line, he flipped backwards, flicking the ball away from the line, but back into the field of play. Then he lunged forward, diving onto the ground smothering the ball. This effort was not lost on his teammates or opponents.
Other notable starts included: Senior Brian Marshall (2 goals) scored the Hawks first goal of the season, on a brilliant fast break in the 1st quarter giving Hayfield a brief 1st half lead. Senior Sean Moment (1 goal), started his scoring run from Hayfield defensive zone, soaring past two Eagle defenders, then splitting the next line of defense for his 1st goal of the season. Senior Angel Medrano (1 goal), continued to work hard, tallying Hayfield’s only goal of the second half, late in the 4th quarter. Hayfield will strive to win their next game, when the Majors of Mt. Vernon come to the Hawks Nest on Thursday.
