Update 5/4. Monday 5/5 is Senior Night and the final regular season Match. The Conference tourney is next Monday, 5/12, and all team members may ride the bus. Senior Night festivities will begin after school and continue through the Match against Yorktown which starts at 4. Team members are bringing pot luck items to share, and we'll have pizza delivered. Girls may bring shirts to decorate along with fabric markers, paints and supplies. The Boys Tennis Team is invited, too. Girls should return uniform pants and long sleeve shirts this week.
Update 4/30. South Lakes 4/30 Match now rescheduled to Friday, 5/2 at 4 p.m., Hayfield. Girls should report to the courts by 3 p.m. to warm-up and prepare for the Match.
'Senior Night' will be the Yorktown Match on Monday, 5/5. (Cinco de Mayo!)
Please be ready to turn in all team-issued gear by mid-May.
Update 4/29. Yorktown 4/28 Match rescheduled for Monday, May 5 at 4 p.m. at Hayfield's courts.
South Lakes 4/30 Match very likely to be rescheduled due to weather. Meet in Team Room 4/30 after school. 'Senior Night' festivities will be on the last home Match day, now 5/5.
Update 4/29. Practice in Gym 4/29 4 to 5:15 p.m.; Yorktown Match postponed to 5/5 due to rain.
Please plan to meet 4/30 after school in the Team Room for distribution of gear, even if Match is postponed due to rain. South Lakes Match is now rescheduled Match for Friday, 5/2.
The Lady Hawks final two regular season Matches are set for Monday 4/28 and Wednesday 4/30 -- however, the forecast calls for rain. The Student Activities staff will reschedule Matches, and coaches will alert athletes as soon as practicable when events change. This site features official news for the team. If a Match is postponed or canceled, students may go home directly after school to focus on academics and projects.
'Senior Night' will occur with the last Home Match, and all team members are strongly encouraged to participate, despite any schedule adjustments. The Liberty Conference Tournament for the top two singles and two doubles teams and alternates is set for Monday, May 12, and the whole Girls team is welcomed to ride the bus to and from the event at Lewinsville Park near Yorktown High School. (Boys teams will be at Yorktown.) The First rounds for both singles and doubles will occur on the first day, and the event may move to an indoor facility if weather causes delay.
The Hayfield Spring Sports awards presentations and banquets will happen in early June, and all team members are invited to attend.
The Match with Fairfax High School is postponed until tomorrow, 3:30 p.m. Wednesday April 23. Per the Student Activities Office, the Girls Team will not practice today. Student Athletes should arrange for rides home directly after school, and may use the afternoon to study and work on projects and adjust to the Match move.
Lady Hawks Tennis will have two Home Matches this week, Wednesday and Thursday, and two next week Monday and Wednesday. The last Home Match, currently Wednesday April 30, is Senior Night. Please contact the coach and Varsity Match Players (except Seniors!) about Senior Night plans. The team is taking up a collection ($5 to $8 each) for Senior Night and end-of-season festivities.
Given the late shift in schedule, no player is required to alert the coach about missing today's Match. Ordinarily, all tennis team members are to be at Practice (3 to 4 p.m.) and at Matches during the last three weeks of the season, or should request an excuse from the coach. The Conference Finals are set for May 12 and 13, and the full team will have bus transport.

Due to rain, the team will practice in the GYM Monday, 4/7 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and will now play the rescheduled Girls Tennis Match with Washington-Lee at Quincy Park on Wednesday 4/9. Thus, the Lady Hawks have three Matches in a row this week: Tuesday with McLean; Wednesday at W-L; and, Thursday at Langley, per the updated schedule.
As a Spring Break send-off event, please plan to bring to Practice on Friday 4/11 a T-shirt, cap or other fabric item to decorate with markers and paints. We're also making plans for Senior Night 4/30 and seek creative ideas. Go Hawks!
The Girls Tennis Match versus Edison will be on Tuesday, April 1, 4 p.m. at Hayfield, rather than March 26 due to the blustery, cold conditions and snow. The team will not have Practice today, allowing student athletes to study and work on projects due this grading period.
Our Away Match at Quincy Park near Washington-Lee HS is set for 3/28 Friday, though the weather forecast indicates a chance of rain. Next week, the team has three Matches in a row: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then a break on Thursday, and a Match on 4/4 Friday. Thus, our next full team Practice will be this Thursday, then the next on April 3rd. Obviously, this schedule is subject to change, so please check this page for updates, plus the online "Resources" and "Links" for tennis rules, tips and instruction.
Due to the snow, Varsity Match Players will practice in the Gym from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today. We have a Home Match against Edison HS tomorrow, and an Away Match against Washington-Lee at Quincy Park on Friday. Developing Players are not required to attend Inclement Weather Schedule indoor practices. All team members must ensure they meet the VHSL standard of participating with the team once per week, minimum.
Hayfield Girls Tennis Team will play Wakefield on Thursday, March 20 instead of Wednesday, March 19 due to weather conditions. The Match will still occur at 4 p.m. at Hayfield's tennis courts. On Friday 3/21, the Lady Hawks will take a 3 p.m. bus from the front of the school to Mt. Vernon HS for their second regular Tennis Match this season. Matches follow every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through April 4. Please check the Girls Tennis schedule page for updates.
Girls Tennis: Gather by 2:30 p.m. in the GYM for the Spring Group Athletes/Big Team Picture today, March 13. Go early to claim your Hawks Athletics T-shirt!
The Spring Student Athletes Group Photo is now set for Thursday, March 13 at 2:45 p.m., immediately before the Girls Tennis team boards the bus for the rescheduled Annandale scrimmage. Girls team members should assemble at the Locker Room (by 2:30 p.m.) to prepare for the photo and scrimmage, and go together to the photo location (bleachers). Team members should wear black pants (or shorts/skorts) with a black long-sleeve top or warm jacket, and everyone will receive a Hawks Athletics T-shirt to put on top. The team will depart for the scrimmage directly after the group photo. This is the photo of all the athletes from all Spring teams, together.
The Girls Tennis Team Photo and Individual Photos for tennis athletes will be Friday, March 14, so members should meet at the Locker Room afterschool (2:20) for an abbreviated Practice and plan to be in position on court (shortest to tallest, in four rows) when the photographer arrives for the 3:45 p.m. appointment. Please wear weather-appropriate black tops and pants (or shorts/skorts) and your Hawks Athletics T-shirt on top. The appointment is a mere 15 minutes -- for taking the team photo and all individual photos -- so it's critical that Girls be ready. Order forms for photos will be available at Student Activities and via coaches, and a blank form is attached to this message. (Please bring your order form and payment for Victor O'Neill Studio!)
The planned location for the Athletes Group Photo is outside (on the bleachers), and on the Tennis Courts for Girls Tennis Team and Individual Photos. Given the weather lately, locations may change, so please report to the team early! Here's the full schedule for Spring Athletics photos:

The Spirit Wear order form for Hayfield Hawks Tennis is now available online under the Girls Tennis Team Files tab. Girls interested in playing Varsity Matches are asked to purchase the Augusta Medalist warm-up jacket and pant set, or at least the jacket. Both the jacket and the pants have performance fabric and ample pockets. The warm-up jacket will have team embroidery, and optional player name embroidery, and has raglan sleeves to allow for fluid shoulder motion, as needed for tennis serves. The warm-up jacket and pant set cost is $46 (less than in 2013), and the jacket is $31, including team embroidery and a player's name if desired. Team members may order the jacket and pants in different sizes. The 2013 team members were impressed with the high quality of the warm-ups, and some have worn their items at 2014 Tryouts.
The order form also has Short-sleeve and Long-sleeve T-shirts in performance fabric, a Hoodie Sweatshirt with pouch pocket, a nylon Drawstring Bag with zipper compartment, and a cotton blend crew neck T-shirt -- all with team screen printing. Order form items are shown in team colors; some items are available in additional colors, for those who want an item in more than one color.
Individual order forms and associated funds are due ASAP, by Friday, March 7, please, to your tennis team coach. We'd like to order them a week earlier so we get delivery sooner, too. Original deadline was March 14, and please talk with your coach if you need more time to assemble your form and funds.
When weather or another condition results in teams not being able to play a Scrimmage, the teams try to reschedule on a date before the first Match; if none is open, a scrimmage may be canceled. When teams can't play Matches, the Student Activities staff often treats those as postponed and coordinates another date to play that Match at the same courts as on the original schedule (and we'll work to get a bus as needed). This is particularly important when the Match affects standings of teams in the Conference. Most Matches occur on the next available date, and sometimes that may be more than a month later or at the end of the season.
Thus, if the weather seems questionable for a Match, please note that we may not ride the bus or play a home Match, and instead may practice from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Gym, or may not practice or play at all that day, for example, if school is not in session. Please plan ahead, and make arrangements so that if a Match does not occur, you can practice with the team if appropriate, or otherwise get home safely at a reasonable time after being dismissed.
So, the snow has come again, and FCPS has now canceled classes and activities for Tuesday, March 4. Hayfield's Student Activities staff have rescheduled the Girls Tennis scrimmage from Monday, March 3 to March 13, Thursday. Since school is not in session Tuesday, team photos and the Meet The Coaches event will need to be rescheduled.
Please check the Student Activities section of HawksAthletics.org and FCPS's Keep In Touch message system for more information.
Friday 2/28, due to the cold weather, Girls Tennis will meet in Locker Room 1608 at the 2:45 p.m. for team coordination. Varsity Match Players for the upcoming scrimmage will practice tennis 4-5:30 in the Gym. In the Locker Room, the coach will accept Spirit Wear order forms and funds, corrected Emergency Care Cards, and discuss team rules, uniforms, lockers, fundraising and events. Team members interested in playing in Exhibition Matches in the First Scrimmages March 3rd and 10th may also practice starting at 4 p.m. in the Gym.
Student Activities staff will make a 2 p.m. announcement about today's team practice. The weekend weather forecast, particularly for Sunday, predicts much warmer conditions, and we encourage all team members to go out and PLAY TENNIS!
Team photos for Girls Tennis will be Tuesday, March 4 after school during Practice. We'll meet at the Tennis Courts unless there is cold or inclement weather. Girls should wear plain, black warm-up style pants and a plain, black, white or orange long-sleeve T-shirt as an underlayer; all team members will receive a Hawks Athletics T-shirt to wear over their warm clothing for the team photo, and to keep and to use as a team uniform. Team members may purchase the team photos with order forms available via Student Activities and Coaches. Girls interested in individual photos will have an opportunity for the professional photographer to take photos that day, and they may buy packages of the photos. Changing into a different outfit for individual photos may be feasible, depending on time and privacy limitations. We advise players to dress in school colors -- orange, white, and neutrals between black and grey -- to show their team spirit.
Parents and guardians of our 2014 Girls Tennis Team may "Meet the Coaches" and Student Activities staff at the annual gathering of coaches, students and families. Check Student Activities board for details.
Hello! For those who've inquired about and are interested in Hayfield Girls Tennis Tryouts, here's the scoop! Please check the Girls Tennis page on HawksAtheltics.org for updates (as soon as I can post them), the schedule, links and resources for tennis training and rules. We're going to enjoy a fun season!
The Hayfield high school Girls Tennis Team Interest Meeting will be on Monday, February 10, 2014 after school in Room 1614. Timing should allow participants to catch a late bus if needed. Interested tennis players will learn about the team format (no-cut), rules, schedule, spirit wear and what's needed for Try-outs on Feb. 24, 25 and 26. First practices will be Feb. 27 and 28, with the first scrimmage on Monday, March 3 in Annandale. The schedule, with bus departure times, appears on the Girls Tennis page of HawksAthletics.org.
Girls wanting to be on the tennis team should assemble all their documents (physical, insurance, concussion education, signed participation permission, etc.) and ensure they are academically eligible for Student Activities by passing at least five of their courses. Forms are available at the Student Activities Office. We encourage girls to practice tennis strokes, review tennis rules and etiquette, watch instructional tennis videos (such as on the USTA Web site), eat well, stay hydrated, and get plenty of rest and regular exercise prior to Try-outs.
High School students are invited to the upcoming Lady Hawks Tennis Interest Meeting, place, date and time to be posted soon. The Interest Meeting content will touch on plans for the season, the no-cut team format and eligibility, match schedule, try-outs, team rules, practices, fundraising and spirit wear.
Students wanting to try-out for the Lady Hawks Tennis Team can learn about requirements to participate in Student Activities -- permission, concussion education completion by student and parent, physical -- so they are eligible to participate. No student may try-out for and remain on the team without meeting VHSL requirements and providing appropriate documentation. The first scrimmage is Monday, March 3, 2014 in Annandale, with the bus leaving at 3 p.m. from the front driveway.
Just as in Spring 2013, Lady Hawks Tennis will operate as a no-cut team. Girls who meet eligibility requirements, adhere to rules and policies and participate meaningfully in team activities may remain on the team and build on and improve tennis skills and boost their overall proficiency in and enjoyment of the game. Highly ranked team members will benefit from additional, specialized practices to prepare for team competition. All Lady Hawks tennis players in good standing may attend and travel to travel to matches and the conference championships, irrespective of tennis prowess. The first scrimmage is Monday, March 3, 2014 in Annandale, with the bus leaving at 3 p.m. from the front driveway. Go Hawks!
