Hawks Win the Bird Bowl: 51-45
Tonight was a high intensive game against our school rival the Edison Eagles. We were never behind in the game, but the Eagles would not go away quietly, it was a close game all the way until the final buzzer. We led the Eagles by two going into halftime (26-24), so the boys knew they had to come out strong for the second half to come out with a win. As the third quarter was coming to the end the crowd was growing as it was getting closer was the varsity show down. For many of these players, it was their first time playing in front of a crowd this big. That is when some nerves kicked in and both teams stared turning the ball over and making bad shot selections. In the final 3 minutes in the fourth quarter, Edison knocked down three big 3’s that brought them to within one at the 1 minute mark. With good defense from the players, we were able to force a couple turnovers which resulted in five points. At that point, we held on to the lead despite only going 3-7 from the free throw line, and won the game by 6.
The team was led by great point guard plays from from Demonte, Jaykeh, and David on both for defense and offense. The trio together scored 33 points and had 10+ steals. Jacqui started out with a quick five points, but early foul trouble unfortunately kept him on the bench for most of the game. Keith and Kennady grabbed 10+ rebounds and had multiple assists that sparked the offense early. It was a good team win and now we are on to the Stallions!
