The JV Hawks came out flat in this OT win. With the game being played on a Monday, it was easy to see that Hayfield was not mentally prepared. After only managing 6 points in the opening quarter, the Hawks did not score again until the 2 minute mark of the second quarter, finishing with a 7-0 run to close within two, to the Raiders of Stuart HS. Hayfield could never seem to catch the Raiders, until late in the extra quarter, when freshman “phenom” Tyler Thornton was fouled in the act of shooting. The Raiders received a technical after the play, sending Tyler to the line for four foul shots, all of which he calmly buried, essentially icing the game, which he almost single handedly won for Hayfield. Tyler led the Hawks for the second straight game, scoring 17 pts. (8-8 from the line), and snatching 3 steals. He was joined in the back court for much of the extra stanza, by Brandon Lawson, who chipped in 8 pts. (4-6 from the line), dishing 4 assts. And grabbing 2 offensive rebounds. Richmond Williams had another strong game on the boards, snaring 9. Teddy Mayo, Kendrick Mack, and Sam Rojas all saw significant minutes, and each contributed with excellent defense and timely scoring. The Hawks have now won 5 in a row!
