Hawks Grounded by Rebels, Lose Third Straight
Hayfield’s Boys JV basketball team returned to the Hawks Nest, with the intention of turning their season around. Their goal was to run the table, and finish at .500 for the season (8-8). That goal will not come to fruition, as the JV Hawks ran into a hot shooting JV Rebels team from Fairfax HS. The JV Rebels buried 7 three pointers, including 6 from one player, who scored one third of his teams’ 74 points.
Hayfield was paced by PG Xavier Gingras (16pts, 3rebs, 2asts), one of the few players on the JV squad who came ready to play. Gingras single handedly kept the JV Hawks in the game, scoring 13 of the JV Hawks’ first 15 points. When he needed a rest, his replacement, SG Eli Villacorte (9pts, 3rebs, 2asts) was equal to the task. Villacorte led all JV Hawks in the 2nd quarter with 6 points (3-6 from the field).
In the third quarter, junior PF Jeremy Jones (14pts, 9rebs, 1blk) took over. Jones scored 10 of the JV Hawks 21 points, including a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. The fourth quarter saw more balance, as the JV Hawks employed a full court press, trying to slow down the Rebels. SF Aaron Jeter (6pts, 8rebs, 1stl) had his best quarter, leading the JV Hawks with 5 points in the final frame, while C Corey McGhee (6pts, 4rebs, 4stls) anchored the center of the JV Hawks press, defecting several passes, while snaring 4. The JV Hawks are right back at it tonight, with a rare Wednesday night game, as they travel to play the JV Seahawks of South Lakes HS. Hopefully this game will prove to be a positive Battle of the Birds.
