JV Hawks Start Slow, Finish Strong; Fall to Yorktown by 10
This game was a tale of two halves, one of which was too much to overcome, despite great effort and desire. The Boys JV Basketball team was defeated by the JV Patriots of Yorktown HS last night, after two great games of high intensity defense. The JV Hawks came out lackadaisically, which led to inconsistent play, poor shot selection, and below average defense. All of these factors led to the Hawks being down by 20 points at the half.
Many teams would not have given much of a second half effort, but they are teams not named Hawks. Coach Davis gave an impassioned halftime speech, which rallied his troops, and raised their level of inspiration. The boys did the rest. The JV Hawks found their defensive intensity, so missing in the first half, and swarmed (led by Corey McGhee, who had 5 steals and 3 blocks) the JV Patriots.
Added to that defensive effort, three of the JV Hawks raised their intensity on offense too. C Jeremy Jones (23pts, 7rebs, 1blk) scored 19 of his team high 23 in the second half (12 of the Hawks 22 in the third). SG Romaine Oakley (14pts, 3rebs) took over in the 4th, scoring 8 of the Hawks 18 in the final frame. As stated above, Corey McGhee (10pts, 9rebs, 5stls, 3blks, 2assts) had an excellent all around second half. Unfortunately, just when the Hawks were about to make that final push to victory, the JV Patriots would come up with a key offensive rebound, or take advantage of a Hawk mistake. In the end, the first half deficit was too much for the Hawks to overcome.
