GAME SUMMARY
Hayfield Edges Marshall in NoVa Softball Tournament The Hawks showed they can win the close ones, too with a 3-2 win against the 7th-ranked Marshall Statesmen in a well-pitched game by both sides. Sophomore Amber Fowler held the Statesmen scoreless until the sixth inning and kept the potent heart of the Marshall lineup, led by returning all-Region players Lauren Sanata and Michelle Tilson, off-balance for most of the night fanning 6.  Hayfield scored all three runs in the top of the 5th against University of Mary Washington signee Christine Grilliot. Junior 3B Angela Sudik led off with a walk and RF Hannah Williams singled up the middle. Junior catcher Sam Perry-Shifflett brought them both home with a line-drive double. Fowler capped the scoring with a single to drive in Perry-Shifflett.  Fowler worked out of a jam after allowing two base runners in the bottom of the seventh and struck out Lexi McPhail to end the game. The Hawks (5-1, 2-0) won their fifth straight game and remain undefeated in Northern Region play.   The Hawks' next contest will be on the road in the first “Battle of The Birds” against crosstown rivals the Edison Eagles since Hayfield moved to the National District for the 2009-10 school year.
