Stallions Ground Hawks Again!
The JV Hawks were beaten by South County again, last Friday night. For last years freshman, this was the third bitter defeat in a row. The Hawks never really got their game going, falling behind by as many as 10 points during the first quarter. Only hot outside shooting and free throws kept the Hawks within 7 by the end of the first quarter.
A strong defensive second quarter, triggered by the Hawks bench, helped trim the lead to 2 points by half time. Coach Poindexter employed a tenacious 2-3 zone trap, which stymied the Stallions, and limited them to 5 points in the quarter. Unfortunately, the Stallions regrouped at the half and came out re-freshed, while the Hawks had another downer of a third quarter. Their lead increased in the fourth quarter, before the Hawks rebounded with 9 points from down-town, finishing the game with their best scoring quarter of the game.
The Hawks were led by Ollie Guydon (13 points), Jeff Erskine (12 points), and Elbert Maxwell (10 points). The Hawks reached the foul line 23 times, only to convert 14. The Hawks struggled from the field, shooting 14 for 48 overall [7-12 (58%) from 3pt range]. The Hawks will next oppose Lake Braddock, after the holiday season.
