The JV Hawks came out blazing in their home opener vs. Herndon HS. Herndon had come in undefeated, employing a brilliant press, that had stymied their opponents. Hayfield however, used the same press against them, and broke theirs almost every time down the floor. Hayfield scored 21 points in the first quarter, shooting 10-14 (all layups). After Herndon closed the 2nd quarter on a run, to get to within 4 pts, the Hawks opened the 3rd quarter with a stifling press, that forced 4 straight turnovers, as Hayfield’s lead swelled to double digits, and the Hawks never looked back, cruising to a 21 point win. The Hawks will close out the pre-Christmas section of the season with a road game against always formidable Washington & Lee HS. The Hawks were led by freshman captain Dalon Thomas, (19 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assts), freshman center Montez Wilson (12 pts, 9 rebs, 2 stls), and sophomore shooting guard Faris Gebril (4 pts, 5 stls, 3 assts). In all, 12 Hawks scored Friday night, including Freshmen Nick Grant (6 pts, 1 stl), and Daquan Poindexter (5 pts, 1 stl, 1 asst), along with Junior forward Xavier Canady (5 pts [1-1 from 3pt], 1 block).
