Jimmy Linza

Boys Varsity Assistant Coach

Boys Varsity Tennis

Coach Linza returns as a JV assistant again this season, after having been the program’s head varsity coach in 2010-11.  As Hayfield’s skipper, Coach L piloted the 2011 team to the best season in school history (20-4, district champs).  Prior to that, he took a Mt.Vernon program that had not won a title in 17 years and led them to one of the finest eras in that school’s 75-year history—including 3 titles in 5 years and an 82-30 record that ranked 3rd in the Region out of 30 teams.  For his efforts, Coach L was named the National District and Northern Region Coach of the Year in 2005.  In his last 22 seasons as a head coach, he has amassed a career record of 328-129-9, leading his teams to 17 titles.  On the field, Coach L played 3 years at Oakton before transferring to cross-town rival Madison his senior year where he was a starter for the Warhawks’ Great Falls District championship team.  Following that, he played 4 seasons at Washington & Lee University, helping the Generals to their first winning season in 17 years as a senior.   Having worked previously in the fields of journalism and law, he is currently in his 23rd year teaching mathematics in FCPS. In baseball, Coach L has been an associate scout for the Major League’s Kansas City Royals, works showcase camps for “Best in Virginia”, is a 2-term past president of the Northern Region Baseball Coaches Association, was a member of the VHSL State Tournament committee, has served on the Board of Directors for both Vienna Little League and the Greater Vienna Babe Ruth League, and has written for several publications--most recently a baseball-related article for the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/recruiting-insider/wp/2013/05/30/how-bbcor-bats-changed-baseball-in-northern-virginia/).  Besides baseball, Coach L was MV’s head varsity golf coach in 2000-01, leading the team to a 6-1-1 record in the final season.  He still lives in his childhood hometown of Vienna with his wife and 2 kids.
